There’s only one word I can think of when it comes to our time in Germany’s Rothenburg ob der Tauber…Incredible. It really was...that’s not an exaggeration! From the moment you step inside the walls of the old city, it’s like you've stepped back in time 500 years.
Rothenburg is one of the most enchanting medieval towns in all of Europe. It’s located along Germany’s famous Romantic Road, and this amazing well‑preserved walled city feels like it’s been lifted straight from the pages of a fairytale.
Pro-Tips for Visiting Rothenburg
If you’re planning a trip to Rothenburg ob der Tauber, first and foremost, arrive early or stay overnight to enjoy the town before and after the day‑trip crowds. Make sure you wear comfortable shoes...those cobblestone streets can get you. Don't forget to try a Schneeball, it's the famous deep‑fried pastry in plain sugar or flavored versions—sample them at local bakeries like Bäckerei‑Café, Friedrich Schöbel, or Bäckerei Striffler...you'll thank us later. Finally, consider visiting in the shoulder seasons (spring or fall) for fewer crowds and milder weather.

A Walk Through History
The cobblestone streets wind past rows of colorful half‑timbered houses, while towering stone gates and city walls stand as reminders of Rothenburg’s 12th‑century origins. Can you imagine that? Walking through a city that has its roots in the 1100s!! You can climb and stroll along preserved city walls for panoramic views of the picturesque Tauber Valley, and it’s a perfect spot for photos.
Marktplatz: The Heart of the City
At the center of town lies Marktplatz, Rothenburg’s bustling main square. Here, the historic Rathaus (Town Hall) and medieval clock tower tell the story of centuries of history. It’s the ideal place to start your visit, soak in the atmosphere, and enjoy local cafés and shops.
Unique Attractions You Can’t Miss
Beyond its stunning architecture, Rothenburg offers unforgettable experiences. If you make it to Germany during Christmas, you really need to visit Rothenburg and take in not only the amazing history, but also the famous Christmas Market and the Night Watchman’s Tour which brings the town’s fascinating past to life after sunset. The Christmas Museum celebrates holiday traditions year‑round, Charming boutique shops and bakeries add even more magic to your trip. Make sure to take time to walk the old wall and explore the towers. Also, you've GOT to get a picture at the Plonlein, an old home (see the picture above) that is one of the most photographed sites in Rothenburg. It is a private home, but it's picturesque setting makes photo worthy...and the owners don't mind, they've gotten used to it!
Reflections
We were in Rothenburg for only about eight hours. But in that eight hours we fell in love with this picturesque town. Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to sit down and enjoy a meal at a local restaurant, but we did enjoy some Brats and Glühwein.
Why Rothenburg Belongs on Your Travel List
Whether you’re drawn by its fairytale beauty, its rich medieval history, or the warm hospitality of its people, Rothenburg ob der Tauber offers a travel experience that feels both magical and timeless.
